Philip Hughes was put to the bar on a similar charge; it appeared that this man was recognized in town, a few days ago, to be one of some more who had absconded about 15 months ago, from the gaol gang at Newcastle; he had been repeatedly advertised, but always contrived to avoid observation. On Thurs- day last, being somewhat inebriated, a constable managed to take him in charge. The prisoner was decently attired, and had employed himself in Sydney, with some degree of credit. Remanded.

The overseer of the gaol gang states....Connel and Hughes were at work with others of the gaol gang the day before yesterday at the cedar grounds. Being a little indisposed, I lay down for about 10 minutes under a cedar log and when I got up I missed them and they having got into the scrub out of sight they escaped for a time...William Turvey states I went in pursuit of the two runaways accompanied by another constable.
